Abstract

The integrated development of creativity, leadership, and problem-solving represents a major challenge for pedagogical innovation in Basic General Education. This study aimed to examine changes in these three competencies following an intervention based on active learning methodologies. A quantitative approach was adopted, with an explanatory scope and a multicenter pre-experimental design using pretest and posttest measures. The participants were 350 students from grades 5 to 9, drawn from 63 schools across eight provinces of Ecuador. The intervention lasted ten weeks and comprised 20 sessions of 45 minutes each, incorporating problem-based learning, project-based learning, gamification, cooperative learning, and discovery learning supported by GeoGebra and Google Classroom. The findings showed significant improvements in creativity, leadership, and problem-solving (p < .001), with large effect sizes. Creativity increased by 1.80 points (d = 1.52), leadership by 1.62 points (d = 1.30), and problem-solving by 2.50 points (d = 2.12). Regression analyses indicated that gamification and discovery learning were significantly associated with creativity, whereas project-based learning and cooperative learning were associated with leadership. In contrast, the overall model for problem-solving was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that active learning methodologies are differently associated with the competencies examined and provide empirical evidence that may inform the design of pedagogical interventions tailored to specific learning outcomes.
