Introduction: University students normally face psychological problems; they are affected both in Academic Engagement (EA) and Academic Self-efficacy (AEA), both men and women.
Objective: Analyze the correlation between (EA) and (AEA), by gender, at a higher level in Ecuador, in times of COVID-19.
Method: a descriptive, comparative by gender, correlational and cross-sectional design was used. Participants: 1026 university students, 67.67% men, the students are between 17 and 34 years old (X ̅ =20.3 years; SD= 2.36), belonging to two Ecuadorian universities (83% public).
Results: the level of the AEA is moderate, while the presence of the EA is moderate-higher. In the AEA the values of the t-test (p > .05) do not show significant differences by gender, and in the EA the mean values of women are higher than those of men and present significant differences (p < .05). On the other hand, the intensity of the covariance between AEA and EA is moderately positive, the relationship between AEA and Invigoration being more marked (r= .544**); and the one with the lowest intensity is between AEA and absorption (r= .489**).
Conclusions: The AEA and EA variables are associated in the educational context. In addition, there are no significant differences in the level of AEA between men and women; while in the case of AD, there is not enough evidence to affirm that there are no significant differences in the levels of AD between the male and female gender.
