The rapid expansion of digital technologies has fostered the integration of digital storytelling and multimodal reading as innovative approaches to strengthening communication skills in basic education. This study aimed to examine how digital storytelling, combined with multimodal reading—understood as a process in which learners construct meaning through the simultaneous interpretation of multiple modes of communication embedded within a narrative—contributes to the development of critical reading comprehension and written expression among students in Ecuadorian General Basic Education. A quantitative, longitudinal, pre-experimental research design was employed, using pretest and posttest measurements with a sample of 389 students from educational institutions in Ecuador. Variables associated with innovative teaching strategies, digital competence, critical reading comprehension, and written production were analyzed through descriptive statistics, paired-samples t tests, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression. The findings revealed significant improvements in students' critical reading comprehension and written expression following the intervention, with large effect sizes (p < 0.001). The greatest gains were observed in inferential comprehension, critical comprehension, and creative writing. Furthermore, innovative pedagogical strategies emerged as significant predictors of these improvements, with digital storytelling and the use of digital technologies showing the strongest contributions. Overall, the results indicate that integrating digital storytelling with multimodal reading effectively enhances both critical reading comprehension and written expression. These findings provide robust empirical evidence to support the design of instructional approaches aimed at strengthening multimodal literacy in basic education.Downloads
