Anxiety and alcohol consumption in high school students of an educational unit of the Riobamba canton, period 2022-2023

The present study aimed to investigate the phenomena of anxiety and alcohol consumption, which in preliminary observations are present at different levels and intensities and at the same time in the sample of interest. In Ecuador, students register high rates of alcohol consumption. Anxiety is a common condition that often coexists and is more frequent in high school students. Objective: identify the relationship between anxiety and alcohol consumption in a sample of 165 Riobamba high school students of both genders. Method: In order to achieve this objective a study of the type quantitative, descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study was carried out by applying the Hamilton Anxiety Questionnaire and the Brief Questionnaire of Alcoholism (CBA). Results: It was found as results that mild anxiety is the one that predominates in students with 46.8% as well as a prevalence of consumption rarely of 45.5%. A relationship of 24.7% was found between mild anxiety and consumption rarely. Conclusions: With the evidence obtained and the application of the chi-square test it is concluded that anxiety and alcohol consumption present a very significant relationship with each other, with which the mechanism of interaction between these variables in this type of population was determined, as well as an update of this line of research with data from Ecuador on these variables.
